Foot Pain Isn’t Your Destiny: A Non-Surgical Treatment for Bunions and Hammer Toes

Let’s talk feet. If you’ve been dealing with bunions, hammer toes, or that one weird toe that won’t bend anymore, you’re probably ready to do just about anything to walk without wincing.

And if you’ve already heard the dreaded phrase, “You might want to consider surgery,” I’ve got some good news: That is not your only option.

In fact, for many people, it’s not even the best option.

We treat a lot of funky feet in the clinic (and I’m not talking about how they smell)—stiff big toes (aka hallux rigidus), toes curling or bunching or lying on top of the others (hammer toe), and feet that are so rigid or floppy that very specific footwear must be worn at all times to avoid fractures or pain. And it’s not just uncomfortable; it changes the way you move and if it changes the way you move, it changes the way you live. Before long, your feet hurt, your knees ache, your hips get stiff, and you’re wondering why walking across a parking lot can leave you sore.

But here’s the thing: most of these problems aren’t just about age, genetics, or bad luck. They’re about function—how you move, how your muscles are firing (or not firing), and what’s been quietly compensating behind the scenes for years.

“It Felt Like Things Were Starting to Wake Up!”

One of my patients recently shared their story—and it’s too good not to include here:

“I was born with a naturally wide toe splay. But over the years, narrow shoes have led to some serious foot dysfunction and instability. I’ve managed to ease pain by switching exclusively to barefoot shoes, but regular acupuncture sessions have made giant leaps in correcting my bunions.

In my first session, Calvert thoroughly assessed my feet’s range of motion and movement patterns. She inserted needles into the muscles that were, from my perspective, ‘turned off.’ Post-session it felt like things were starting to wake up! This was the push I needed to start drilling that new movement pattern into my nervous system through foot strengthening and mobility exercises.

In the next couple acupuncture sessions, we continued to build progress by bringing more muscles on board. My foot literally twitched and tik-tok’d around—kind of weird but not painful at all. On my end, I continue to do the foot exercises because that will create long lasting change.

Acupuncture has propelled me forward in my foot stability. I can feel the shift all the way up into my hip. The bunion is reducing and I feel overall more connected and grounded!”

Electroacupuncture: A Gym Membership for Your Nervous System

So what’s actually happening in these treatments?

We use electroacupuncture, which is basically traditional acupuncture’s hyped up cousin. Same tiny needles, but with a very low electrical current that gets muscles to fire, nerves to communicate better, and circulation to improve.

It’s kind of like a call to action for body parts and systems that are stuck in patterns of coping and no longer adapting healthily. Stiff toes? Underused foot muscles? Chronic pain that’s been creeping upward into your knees and hips? We work with all of it.

It’s not nearly as scary as it might sound. As my patient said—your foot might twitch or do a little shimmy, but the sensation is at most weird, not painful.  Just weirdly satisfying.

This Is Not Just About Your Feet

Your feet are your foundation. When they’re out of whack, your entire body has to adjust. And usually not in a way that supports for optimal living. As biomechanist Katy Bowman puts it:

Foot pain is often a message that the body is moving incorrectly—not that it’s broken.”

And if you’ve been in stiff shoes, high heels, or anything with a toe box that restricts a wide to splay, your feet might need the re-education and reminder of what they can really do.

That’s where the rest of our approach comes in. Alongside acupuncture, we’ll walk (pun intended) you through:

  • Foot mobility work
  • Toe spacers (to un-smoosh decades of fashion choices)
  • Targeted strengthening exercises
  • Gait and posture tweaks
  • Footwear guidance that doesn’t involve giving up your personality

In short: you get a full-body strategy that helps you feel grounded, stable, and like your feet belong to you again.

Wait, Can This Actually Replace Surgery?

Sometimes, yes. Not always—but a lot more often than you think.

At Calvert Acupuncture and Spa we are not anti-surgery, not at all. But we are very pro “let’s try literally everything else first.” If we can wake up dormant muscles, rewire your movement patterns, and help rebuild strength—your body often takes care of the rest. Pain decreases, the deformity softens, and you start to move differently: function is restored.

It’s not magic, though we hear this quite a lot. It’s anatomy, neurology, and a little bit of very old-school healing wisdom.

So if your bunion has become your weather barometer…
If your toes have started staging snuggling together…
If you’ve already Googled “hammer toe/bunion surgery recovery time” and immediately regretted it…

Come in. Let’s see what’s possible. Your feet—and the rest of your body—might surprise you.
