Acupuncture For Scars and Injury or Surgery Recovery in Herndon, Virginia
Acupuncture For Scars and Injury or Surgery Recovery
If you’re contemplating or facing surgery in the coming months, if you’ve recently had surgery, are recovering from an injury, or are dealing with stubborn scar tissue or long-healing injury, you know how frustrating or nerve-racking it can be to wonder if you’ll ever get back to feeling like yourself. Healing does take time, sure, but there are ways to help your body recover faster and better. At Calvert Rejuvenations Acupuncture and Spa in Herndon, VA, we specialize in scar tissue repair and injury recovery using acupuncture, manual lymphatic drainage and myofascial release, powerful modalities to promote healthy soft tissue repair, improve function, and reduce pain.
Let’s take a quick look at what happens when your body repairs itself after an injury or surgical intervention and when and how to optimize this process for the quickest and most robust healing.
The Three Phases of Healing
Your body is naturally programmed to heal itself as quickly as possible. Healing soft tissue (like muscles, tendons, or skin) happens in three main phases:
- The Inflammatory Phase (0–72 hours)
Think of this as your body’s “911 response.” As soon as there’s an injury, your body sends in immune cells like white blood cells and macrophages to clean up the damage. This triggers swelling (and sometimes pain), thanks to chemicals like bradykinin. Inflammation is important, but too much can slow things down. - The Repair Phase (72 hours–6 weeks)
Now your body starts laying down new collagen to repair the tissue. Collagen is like the scaffolding that holds everything together, but at this stage, it’s not perfectly organized. That’s why injuries can feel stiff or tight during this phase. - The Remodeling Phase (3 weeks–6 months)
Finally, your body reorganizes the collagen to make the tissue stronger- Scar tissue (also known as adhesions) forms, which, without proper intervention or guidance, can limit your mobility and cause long-term discomfort if it is less flexible or lacks the blood flow of normal, healthy tissue. (A sign of this is a scar that’s a different color than the rest of you, or the skin doesn’t move well around it)
Where Acupuncture Comes In
Acupuncture can support your body at every stage of the healing process. In fact, the sooner you receive treatment as you recover the better and faster this process gets under way! Here’s how:
- In the Early Stages (0–72 hours)
Acupuncture calms the inflammatory response, reducing swelling and pain. It works by encouraging your body to release neurotransmitters like GABA and dopamine, which help regulate inflammation naturally. - During Repair (72 hours–6 weeks)
Acupuncture improves circulation to the injured area, bringing in oxygen and nutrients that are essential for building healthy new tissue. It helps manage pain so you can stay active during your recovery—movement is key for proper healing! - For Remodeling and Scar Tissue (3 weeks–6 months)
Scar tissue forms when the body overcompensates during healing. Acupuncture, especially when paired with techniques like electroacupuncture or manual therapy, breaks down adhesions, restores flexibility and mobility, and stops pain signals from creating dysfunctional compensatory patterns (gait, posture, mobility restrictions) .
Don’t Let Scar Tissue Limit You or Hold You Back
If you’re feeling stuck in, or nervous about your recovery or are concerned that scar tissue will limit you, you have reason to have hope. Acupuncture is an effective, evidenced-based modality to get your body and healing back on track.
